COMMUNICATION AND COLLABORATION
Communication and Collaboration are two interdependent facets that are important in the nursing field. Good communication between nurses is essential in performing interventions that bring about quality care to the patient. On the other hand, a collaborative approach called Team Nursing enables nurses to work in a synergistic and orderly manner. This reflective journal will tackle about Communication and Collaboration in nursing while using the Gibb’s reflective cycle.
Nursing does not only require knowledge. It is also rooted in the element of communication. It paves the way for all nursing interventions like prevention, promotion, treatment, health education and even rehabilitation (Fakhr-Movahedi, Salsali, Negarandeh, & Rahnavard, 2011). Collaboration in a form of team nursing is also vital because it utilizes the diversity of skills, education, and qualification level of all staff (Dickerson & Latina, 2017). I agree with the notion regarding these two concepts. I am happy that I was able to hone my skills in both communication and collaboration within the years of practice.
There are so many positive points behind this topic. Both communication and collaboration enable nurses to hone their total skills not just in the bedside but also within the realm of all nursing related actions such as management, research and teaching. I have learned that for a nurse to be successful, he or she needs to adapt with the changing environment. One way of adapting is through good communication and collaboration practice. This in turn can lead to patient satisfaction and teamwork within the institution (Flin, Fletcher, McGeorge, Sutherland, & Patey, 2003).
Thus, nursing is truly dependent on good communication and collaboration practices. It is safe to say that nursing cannot exist as a field without communication and collaboration. In the future, I am planning to enhance my communication skills by interacting with more patients and co-staff. I would like to also improve my knowledge of collaboration by actively participating in hospital led programs like health education and promotion.
In a nutshell, communication and collaboration are essential in nursing. Using the Gibbs reflective cycle, I was able to discern my knowledge and feelings about the topic at hand. In the future, I would like to improve on these so that I can impart my knowledge to the nursing team and most of all, to my patient.
