MY NURSING PHILOSOPHY
Culture plays a valuable part in the concept of nursing. As a Filipino, the caring process, which is rudimentary to nursing, was introduced to me at an early age. Growing up, I had the luxury of having two maternal figures, my biological mother and my aunt. They were the ones who inculcated to me the real meaning of the word “compassion”. During my teenage years, I was exposed to different people that added fire to my nursing journey. My friends, teachers and classmates were the ones who showed me that caring is not just limited to feeding and bathing. They were able to broaden my thinking that caring is also related to positive reinforcement of emotions, feelings and perceptions.
Nursing is not just a profession. it is a calling, a passion. Some people might even consider it as their life’s work. It is hard to take care of an individual who is a complete stranger at first glance. The reward comes after you see those complete strangers walk out the hospital a brand-new version of themselves. Nursing is very holistic in a sense that you get to know everything about your patient. It is the responsibility of the nurse to address every bit of patient information so that a holistic nursing approach can be sought. This is the true essence of nursing – putting the patient at the centerstage.
